So for me, the top two that I'm having heavy rotation is um Jill Scott's new album, which I love. Yes, yes. She's been gone for seven, eight years, and I missed my girl. Her music does so much for my everything. She has been a saving grace for me in the music industry, and I'm just glad to have her back. Cool. She never misses. Her albums always hit. And this one is amazing. She's going on tour, so I'm excited about that. As well as my boy Duran Bernard. His album Bloom is phenomenal. And he just won his first Grammy. He's an amazing album. I'm so proud of him. And his album is phenomenal. All his music is. And I'm just, those are two people that I keep in my in my artillery for music for sure.

Nothing wrong with some oldies. Well, like you, I have a whole 90s playlist that stays in heavy broken. I'm talking about 702, Salt and Pepper, Slim, but then Miss Olivia Dean, she has kind of eclipsed my 90s playlists a bit. I I mean, I wake up to her, I go to sleep with her. I'm I'm like, girl, where you been? Like, she I feel like she almost belongs with the 90s playlist because she has such a soul full of voice. I'm like, girl, you was you literally were born in the wrong era. Uh your mama had you late, like, girl. So I put her right in the 90s playlist, although I know she's about 12 years old, but I just ooh.

And it's funny that you should say 90s uh because one thing I was doing recently, I don't not know why I was in this new jack swing vibe. And I went on the Apple um Apple music and typed that in, and they had this whole playlist. And I mean, it was hit after hit on the ground. I went down a whole rabbit hole of every I was like, I didn't, I guess I did not realize how many like Janet Jackson had New Jax Swing. Like there was so many songs like in Vogue and all of them that New Jax swing sound. So yeah, yeah, and that was straight 90s.

Yes. I mean, truly, if you were not, you know, if you were not a 90s kid or if your mama didn't play 90s, you truly missed out on a great era of music. I know people say the 2000s, but I'm like, no, I beg to differ. I will counter you with my ace 90s music.

Real music go down in the 70s. I'm sorry. Any music that came out during the 70s, whether it was gospel, whether it was RB and soul, disco. Yes, because during that time for me was like the height of instrumentation.

Well, you have to think about what was going on in the world, too. It was so much going on in the world. So the music spoke to what was happening politically, socially, you know, uh justice-wise, and the music spoke to the era of what was going on. So if you go and listen to the 70s and the 90s again was another era that spoke to what was going on, you know, politically, socially, just this neighborhood, and we were coming into our own. So it's just like, can we bring back some of that music that's especially now speaking to that hearing in the background of the music?

Guitar and the horns. Shout out Prince, shout out to Prince. Yes, he was big on it. I love hearing instruments. Not that I don't, you know, like hearing the boom, you know, beats of the sync. All right. So for the topic at hand today, we'll be discussing um the new hire survival guide. So you've made it past the interview. You've done all the things. You've packed, you've made it into class. So how do we survive new hire? You here, you pass all the things. Woohoo! I'm winged up. I've cried. Gotcha. The reality has hit me. I'm here. What do I do? First of all, 15 minutes? I've given myself 15 minutes. However, Eric Jerome Dickey, Brother Dickey, has said it best. If you were early, you were on time. On time is late. Late is unacceptable. Shout out Brother Eric Jerome Dickey. That's something that you should keep as your mantra and keep in mind when you are a new hire, alright? Be early. Okay? Be on time. Five minutes, that's not enough time. Be early. That plane is going with or without you.

And to that point, um one, we're talking about those that are on probation. And probation for those that are not in the industry is your first six months. Um, and so we're speaking to those that are still within their first six months of flying. Um and what Michelle is pointing out is something that I see often with new hires, even when it comes to lobby time. They're waiting to that very last minute where you rushing and you're walking out the door to get on the shuttle. And mind you, the captain, the FO, two other senior flight attendants that already know the game. Or three others, or six others, or nine others. Yes.

Don't be the last to get on the shuttle. Thank you. We should not be waiting on you. Be there early. Set your alarm so that you give yourself enough time to get to where you need to be. Set yourself up for success. Correct. You know what I mean?

Because it's been plenty of times you think you, oh, I got two minutes. You get on that L in the elevator taking forever, and now you done laid, or you forgot something in the room, gotta go back upstairs and get it. Absolutely.

And prep pre-pack your bag. There's no reason to have everything laid out everywhere. You are there for the night. You are not on vacation. You are there for the night. Okay? So keep in mind that all you need is what you need for that night and for the morning. If you've gone out and had a good time, you've swam, you've done all the things, repack your bag that night. So in the morning, all you need is what you need for that day and for that next morning. Iron your clothes at night. Put your pajamas up. If you've gone out and had a good time, if you went out and shocked, that's great. Put those things away.

And the reason we say that is because I've experienced it a few times, and I'm sure y'all probably have too. Things happen. Alarms don't go off, phones die, and you think they're plugged in, or you just might be so tired you don't hear your alarm. And you wake up and you got five minutes to get downstairs. Absolutely. And the best thing to know is I'm well, I already washed. I already bathed. I've already got my stuff ironed and ready to go. So it helps when those situations happen. You can get out the door a lot faster. Yes. And otherwise you got to go and get everything, put everything together. Now you're late. Now you got to Uber to the airport and meet your crew. Yes.

And that is one of the worst things. Or worst feelings ever to miss that shuttle and arrive, and everyone is staring at you. That is one of the worst feelings ever. And that's not the one where you want to start your day either. Absolutely.

One and the only time that I ever was in a situation like that. Thankfully, I was at in Hartford and I was at the airport hotel. Oh, good. Right. I got out of the call. Because my I don't know. I guess I forgot to set my alarm and literally they were calling, like, hey, we're waiting on you. Baby, I don't know.

That's the worst feeling in the world.

To just jump into clothes. Like and throw things in a bag.

You can barely brush your teeth.

SPEAKER_01

Thankfully, we just was walking down the hall. But just imagine, like, go without me, and then that again puts a target on you. I don't want to say on your back, but it puts a target on you. It's putting you on radar of now, if it's late, and the pilots are showing up late and the rest of the crew are showing up late, scheduling is going to be involved. If they leave without you, and now you have to take an Uber, you gotta hope and pray that Uber is showing up right then right then and then 15 minutes away. Because even if it gets to the ops agent, the ops agent is now calling, scheduling, and you have a target on you.

So yeah, that is that is a laundry list of problems, and you haven't even started your day. So now you are in the red or already playing, and that's not coupled on whatever potentially could be happening for the rest of the day. And you don't want to start your day already zoned in the, you know, in the red or already stressed to begin your day. And who knows what the rest of the day is. You need to start your day calm, with the right mind, you know, ready for whatever the day is gonna bring. And you can't say if you have an emergency, oh, I'm so sorry, I'm stressed. I can't deal with this today. That's not the right mind. We talked on our last episode about being calm and kind and collected and ready for the day, right? And that's what we need to have when we start our day as a flight attendant, especially as a new flight attendant. Because as we know, re-ro reroutes happen, things happen, turbulence happen, potentially an accident or incident can happen. And if you're already thinking about I was late, where's your brain gonna be? Not focused, not focused on the task at hand. We need to be ready for whatever the day is gonna bring. Speaking on that, golden rule of the galley. Listen more than you talk. Hello. If you step on and you're that new flight attendant, and someone singer to you says, Well, I need you to do this, please don't counter with well, um, actually, probably not the best thing to say. Just listen, listen to learn, don't listen to object.

And one thing I was I was going to wait to point this out after we got through some of this, but I'm gonna I'm feeling that I should point it out now.

New hires. Your flight attendants that you're working with that are not on probation, we receive emails that want us to evaluate you, not the other way around. Be kind and don't, as Michelle just put out, be a know-it-all of you think you know better than because one, even if you think you know better in that one situation, it is majority of the time a day or two left. And that one slip up is now going to have me remember you. When majority of the time, it might not happen where because the email comes and I done forgot, I can't evaluate. Why am I gonna try to evaluate somebody I flew with that majority of the time probably they did their job, it was uneventful. Absolutely, you know, can't really speak to it because when it comes. But let you have an attitude or let you try to overstep yourself. Um, and we said in our last episode about delivery, be mindful of your delivery, even if you are maybe correct in a situation, the way you show up and how you deliver that says a lot says a whole lot because one thing if you don't know, most flight attendants keep lists of who they will never fly and slide with. I know I do, and you do not want to end up on someone's personal list of no fly list, no mm-mm, never flying with this person again as soon as they see your name, changing trips or doing whatever. Um and then because you're a new hire, you cannot majority of the time control who you fly with. Because one thing that will I can now come off that uh soapbox and go into most airlines have you on reserve. Yes, and for each airline, as we pointed out, um, it's different. Um, and we're not going to specify what airline does what because we're not going to get that incorrect. Um, but the one thing you do need to understand reserve means on call. Means your life belongs to that company for however many days it is. There is no ifs, ands, or buts about that. And majority of the time, even in the first six months and being on reserve, you want to be mindful on how often you call in sick. Um, if you you, you know, making sure you are in the base for most airlines within whatever that call time uh is being within um a radius of the airport. Make sure you two hour driving distance. Two hour, yeah, driving distance for most airlines, two or three. But find out those, those are the things you need to be focusing on because a lot of times that's what catches up probation flight attendants. Too many sick calls, because you don't you you're not able to be covered by FMLA or um any other doctor's notes and protections, certain uh certainly because you're still probation. Yeah, meaning the company is testing if they if you're gonna be a permanent employee or not, and if this is going to be a permanent workout. And yes, our comp our most airlines, I'm not gonna say most, some airlines have unions, some don't. If you are lucky to work with an airline that has a union, there are some protections for you as a probation, Nary uh flight attendant, but the majority are still the majority, you're still not covered fully. Am I right or wrong?

No, you're correct, because think about it like this while you're on probation, you're still technically in that interview process. That interview doesn't end until your probation ends. So, yes, you have the wings. You're still proof technically you're still in that interview process, you're still being interviewed by that company until your probation ends. You're technically still interviewing. It doesn't end. So that's why it's best as you were saying to kind of keep on your listening ears. You're still listening and learning.

And you don't know it all. And for those who may come from one company to another, don't come with the perspective of well at my other airline, I did. Please don't come with that because every single airline's standards, rules, you know, job requirements are different. I can't go to this carrier and say, Well, at this carrier, I did, well, this is another carrier that was different. Every single carrier is different. And for those of you who are lucky, because it is it is a privilege to be able to come from this carrier, get hired at another carrier, and be able to do this job. It's a privilege to get hired once. Yes. But the privilege and ability to get hired at another carrier is phenomenal. The privilege and ability to get hired at a third carrier is phenomenal. So shout out to those who have had multiple careers at multiple carriers. That is truly a milestone. Yes, it is. We love our regional brothers and sisters just as much as we love our mainline brothers and sisters. So I do want to, you know, give love for both, um, for both carriers. I know sometimes our regional brothers and sisters don't get that. They deserve it because they do the same job we do just on smaller planes. Sometimes they work harder. They work harder. They do five, six legs a day than our mainline carriers. This is not too shade, our mainline brothers and sisters, but I have a lot of love for the regional, um, for our regional brothers and sisters, pilots, flight attendants, and y'all.

Actually, we haven't even got into it. Darien spoke on uh, and we're going to do an episode specifically dealing with private private flight attendants. Absolutely. They do above and beyond what we're absolutely, yeah.

I absolutely love y'all. That will come in a uh future, you know, future episode. So I do um want to definitely touch on that. That, you know, when you're on reserve, you're still interviewing. Yes, you know, you have wings, but it's kind of you know, it's kind of you're still interviewing for the entire process. So don't mistake that that you know, oh, nothing can happen to me because I have my wings now. Well, technically, you have your wings with an asterisk because you're still in that interview process.

It's better to be seen and not heard.

Absolutely.

And that's not that's because I don't want it also to come off as if we're bashing new hires. It's not that we absolutely love you guys, we love you guys, and and we are thankful that you're there because you help not only increase our seniority, um, it also is a sign that our our companies are growing and growth is always good in this industry. However, just like we talked in our first episode about the the way we have gotten bad reps with the normal public on being hoes and all the other stuff, perception um because of some bad apples. There have been bad apples when it comes to probationary flight attendants in their approach. Understand that every flight attendant that you work with is not the same. So come on each and every plane. Clean slate, brand new, absolutely, not thinking just because you had fun with um you know the last flight attendant on the last trip you've worked, that it's going to be the same energy on this because there are people are slow burns. You got some slow burn flight attendants that it takes a little while to warm up to.

You got some that some that come in and immediately you your energy, you know, meshes and matches. So just come in, clean slate. Clean slate. This is who I am. Introduce yourself and let your personality speak for you as soon as you come in. Don't come in with preconceived notions about a base or a place or a situation. Every single Crew is going to be different.

Come on with the right attitude.

You know, and come on and just be ready for, you know, just like in aviation, how we have, you know, ride the wave for whatever is going to come.

Yeah, because you don't know what to expect, especially to bring really back into the reserve life. Like, you don't know where you're going until they ring, ring, ring, call your phone, absolutely. And they say, hey, you're headed here. You might be going to Tokyo. You might be ending up in LA. You might end up in New York. You don't know where you're going until they call you. And there is no saying no.

Absolutely.

You might have four legs, five legs. There is no saying no, I don't want to do that. You have to, whatever they give you, you have to accept. And keep in mind, when you're talking to scheduling, everything's recorded. So make sure that your responses and your attitude and the way you do the delivery with them in dialogue with them is right because everything's recorded.

Absolutely. And even and even with that, so how do we pack? Like, so so what am I supposed to put in this bag? I've now got this bag. The night before you say I'm going to Tokyo, I know it's potentially cold and rainy, but then you say I'm going to LA. So what do I put in my bag? How do I know what to pack? I've got this job. I don't know what to pack. I know if I'm going to Tokyo, I'm trying to put everything in a bag. But I have to carry it. So what do I pack? How do I pack? I know one thing for me that was effective for me when I started packing cubes. Oh my goodness, packing cubes. For me, they are like four or five little bags. I can put everything, I can divide everything up so that I just don't have random clothes, just look like it exploded in my bag. I can find those on Amazon. You can find them in the store. You know, most economical for me was finding them on Amazon. They're washable. You know, I can take them out. I just have pull out my bags. It keeps everything organ organized. I'm such an organizy person. So I absolutely love those. Um you can put uniforms in one bag, you can put clothes in another, you can use another one for toiletries, you can use one for a makeup bag or you know, a toiletry bag, and then I don't have to worry about where's everything. Everything it's a place for everything and everything in its place.

I I know we we uh you know have these overnights where we expect to do A, B, and C as we forestated in other episodes.

One or two, yeah, where it's like moment's notice, your schedule can change. So be mindful of that. But also the heavier your bag, the more exhausted you gonna be. The more exhausted you're gonna be. You might slow the rest of the crew down because you asking for help to with your bag and stuff like that. Rule of thumb, you probably only need one uniform, and maybe if if it's top and bottom, maybe an extra shirt or something like that.

Like one uniform? Huh? What you mean, one uniform?

Another one. The one they're wearing. Oh, I'm about to say and maybe an extra shirt or something. Okay, but I'm gonna do that.

No full three uniforms for the day. No, no, no.

Yeah, I tell people all the time bring extras because you might spill something on you. Somebody might happen to me, somebody threw up on me on the plane. You might deal with cleaning and something gets on you that's sustained. So for me, what I do is I bring one pair of slacks and I bring three, a shirt for every day.

Because I am re-wearing a shirt two days before. My mama raised me. You know what I mean?

And for me, and definitely for me as a as a female, if I wear a dress, you know, I am a I am a whole uniform-changing person. So if I'm wearing a skirt and a shirt on day one, if I'm wearing a dress the next day, that's another dress. If I'm wearing pants, or if I'm wearing pants, same thing. I'm bringing another spare pair of pants. I'm bringing different shirts. Because you never know. More than enough underwear. I know you're more than enough underwear. I know, I know your grandmama told you, bring more underwear than you think you need. Because you never know what can happen if you run out of uniforms. At least you can keep your bottoms, your bottoms clean. And bring spare pantyholes, bring spare socks. Always, you know, go through your bag, everybody. This every flight attendant, I'm gonna I'm gonna challenge everybody to do this. Go through your bag and look at what you want versus what you need. Because I promise there's something in that bag that you've been carrying, and you like, I really don't need this. I want it, but I don't need it. Oh, and bring some workout clothes. Bring some workout clothes. Bring some work, absolutely.

Probably don't want to be a big thing. Don't y'all go to the don't y'all go to the bar. Because I mean y'all, y'all, y'all go a little too far. The pilot like having too much fun.

That don't get too late on your overnights because you be like me and you oversleep and was late.

But never fall. One thing I do want to go into. If a pilot or flight attendant is being kind to you as a new hire, do not take advantage of that. Yes. Do not, if the pilot is willing to pay for your meal, don't order the most expensive thing on the menu. If the flight attendant is willing to, you know, get your van took. Don't expect that the next city y'all go to if if there's another day or two left, that that's going to happen. Prepare yourself for you. Yes.

Absolutely. Those are those are exceptions, not the rule.

Yep. That's all it is. So we're gonna touch quickly on financial survival. How can I survive? I don't have a paycheck. What can I do? How can I how how can I make it work?

Pack your food.

Bring your own food. So good um crew bag coolers that you can find. Um some good brands that we like at uh here at Jumpseat Chronicles. I know it's not always everybody's favorite to bring soups, tuna, fruit, those kind of things. But when you're on probation and you're not making very much, it works, it works for you.

And we got the job tuna in the bag with saving grace. Oh, yeah, those are good. In a good protein. Absolutely. Tuna in the bag.

Because you're gonna be there's times where you're gonna be on a plane working four or five legs, and you don't get chances in between those flights to eat because you gotta get ready to start boarding. So when you're in the air, you need little things sustainable that you can snack on to sustain you until you get your mail. Yes.

Yes, the little what's some things the uh the the Uncrustable.

Uncrustibles, yeah, uncrustible. Listen, nothing wrong with it. I still, after 20 years, will grab me an uncrustable, bananas, fruits, all of that. Those are things that you can have and eat. I know we'll make a lot of money, you know, when you're first starting, but keep those things in mind when you are a new flight attendant.

And hydrate. Please drink water. Hydrate.

Drink in the air at that altitude. Oh, you'd be dry as a reptile. You gotta drink you can get lightheaded.

Don't be gonna plane drinking coke all day. And you can collapse if you are not hydrated. So please hydrate yourself because the the consistency of going up and down in the altitude weighs on you. So hydrate.

And really quickly, you are going to get sick your first year. Whether you think you're not going to, and oh, my immune system is great, it doesn't matter. You are going to get sick because of the people you are around, the temperatures and atmospheres that you are dealing with, you're gonna get sick. People cough for the sneezing, get your vitamins, invest in some vitamins, a daily vitamin, multivitamin, yeah, a multivitamin, and also just get you a small little first aid kit with medicines in it. And bring emergency. You know, I love emergency. I'll both say that emergency.

Those little packets of emergency are really good for your immune system. Because you don't need a strong immune system for this job, y'all because you're going to get sick. And when I tell you, it's no joke.

Make sure you have a primary care. If you don't have one, look into that. Get one. So when you have ear infections or sinus infections, and because again, that happens often. I know many flight attendants that have I've had sinus infections and ear infections, but I've never had to have tubes put in my ear. But some flight attendants end up having that done. As a probationary flight attendant, that's something you need to know that happens with this job. The consistent up and down and altitude does weigh on you. So please get with a primary care if you don't already have one because it's important healthy. Yeah.
